The Special Litigation and Support Unit (SLSU) works on legal problems that affect large groups of low-income people. Successful case outcomes bring about permanent changes in services, systems and institutions that ultimately benefit hundreds or even thousands of individuals and families. The SLSU has a high level of expertise in the areas that most commonly affect low-income people: housing employment, government benefits, education and immigration. Several projects managed by the SLSU help people who face unique barriers to the legal system, such as migrant farmworkers, people with mental and physical disabilities, the homeless, immigrants, and senior citizens. Affirmative advocacy is a vital part of ABLE’s approach to resolving client issues.
