Honoring dedicated public servants for committing their lives to helping others

Some have worked diligently in our community as advocates for the rights of low-income and disadvantaged people living in the Miami Valley. The Access to Justice Awards Celebration recognized those individuals on Thursday, Nov. 14, at the Sinclair Community College Conference Center.

The event is presented annually by the Greater Dayton Volunteer Lawyers Project (GDVLP), Legal Aid of Western Ohio, Inc. (LAWO), and Advocates for Basic Legal Equality, Inc. (ABLE), area providers of civil legal aid services. Proceeds help the three organizations provide free legal assistance to low-income clients who cannot afford an attorney when facing issues like domestic violence, elder abuse, tenant-landlord, and foreclosure issues, disability, health care, and immigration concerns.

Honorees included:

  • Lloyd O’Hara Public Interest Law Award: Michael A. Rake, Esq., Horenstein Nicholson & Blumenthal, LPA, Partner
  • Patricia Rousseau Community Advocacy Award: Gary LeRoy, M.D., Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine | President of the American Academy of Physicians
  • Community Impact Award: The Rev. Daryl Ward and the Rev. Vanessa Ward, Omega Baptist Church, Pastors Emeritus
