Community Organizer (Dayton): Neighborhoods B.U.I.L.D. Dayton Project

Advocates for Basic Legal Equality, Inc. (ABLE), a non-profit regional law firm that provides high-quality legal assistance to low-income individuals and groups in western Ohio, seeks a Community Organizer for the Neighborhoods Bringing Urban Initiatives through Legal Development (B.U.I.L.D.) Dayton Project.

The Neighborhoods B.U.I.L.D. Dayton Project promotes community power through community engagement and legal services. We assist leaders in several of Dayton’s most vulnerable neighborhoods to address community-identified issues and work with communities to develop resident-led initiatives and legal solutions to improve the quality of life in the neighborhoods.

The Community Organizer will work with the Neighborhoods B.U.I.L.D. Dayton Project Director and Staff Attorneys to

• Develop and implement an effective plan for engagement of client communities
• Strengthen relationships with client communities in our target neighborhoods
• Collaborate with existing and newly-identified neighborhood leaders to raise awareness of community-identified problems and to build leadership capacity, including campaign-building, meeting-organizing, and other self-advocacy skills
• Spend time in the community getting to know its members and culture, to listen effectively and identify issues, and then to synthesize that information and convey it to the rest of the team
• Obtain data from Project neighborhoods, track project outcomes, and analyze these outcomes to report on the impact of the Project to funders and stakeholders

A successful applicant must demonstrate the ability to adapt to diverse groups of clients living in poverty, many of whom are living in crisis with limited access to basic resources such as clean water and safe, affordable housing. Some assistance with community-identified legal cases may be required.
Cultural competency is valued at ABLE. Applicants must have: excellent organizational and writing skills; the ability to relate well with clients living in poverty; ability to empower people to work together; computer proficiency; and a strong commitment to equal justice. Some evening and weekend work. This position requires significant travel to local community activities. Applicants will need reliable transportation, must have a valid driver’s license, and must meet ABLE insurance requirements. Salary based on relevant experience. Comprehensive benefits package.
